This Underrated Ingredient Makes The Perfect Natural Hair Gel + Recipe

Of all the DIY beauty hacks, I bet this one will surprise you the most.

A big part of my Loc journey had been the quest for natural hair care and the religious avoidance of gel for my re-twists. I wanted a gel that would have a good hold, maintain my edges, and not cause build-up or become flaky after drying. That’s when I remembered a DIY gel I used to define my curls and tame frizz before I loc’d my hair, and you’ll never guess what I used to make the gel.

Natural homemade flaxseed gel

Flaxseeds! that’s right, I made a natural gel with adequate hold and nourishing properties just by boiling flaxseeds. And it doesn’t flake or crunch after drying or cause build-up either!!

After recently getting the opportunity to resurface my flaxseed gel recipe to re-twist my partner’s hair, I decided to tweak it a bit. In addition to the flaxseeds, I also added sage, rosemary, and lavender clippings from the garden to give a more aromatic smell.

Why flaxseed gel is so good for your hair

Not only are flaxseeds nutritional, it’s also amazing for hair and skin. Flax seed gel is great for defining curls, taming frizz, and even laying down hairs with adequate hold.

It also nourishes and hydrates your hair follicles, with its make-up of proteins, vitamin E, and B among other nutrients and healthy fats. This flaxseed gel can even strengthen hair from the root and promote growth.

How to make Flaxseed gel for your hair

What you’ll need:

1/2 cup of flaxseeds

2 cups of water

essential oil or aromatic herbs (optional)

How to make Flaxseed gel

– Pour 1/2 cup of Flaxseed into a pot, and then add 2 cups of water.

– Put the pot on the fire, and stir every once in a while until it starts boiling.

– Turn the fire down to medium as soon as it starts to turn into a gel, you need it to be something between runny and hard. ( the thicker the gel, the stronger the hold)

– Using a muslin cloth ( a cotton T-shirt or pantyhose can also be used if you don’t have one), pour the flaxseeds and the gel into a jar to separate them while it’s still fairly hot.

– Wait until it cools down, and then put it in the fridge. You can use it for two weeks.

Note: You can add Vitamin E, Aloe Vera gel, tea tree oils, or any oil that you like to add fragrance or additional nourishing properties.

Briefly…

Flaxseed gel is a great natural alternative to gels you find in the store that can cause build-up, between styles and dry out hair follicles. With this simple and easy DIY, you can use the flaxseed gel in your hair to hydrate, define curls, tame frizz, and lay down hairs just like a store-bought gel without all the unnecessary gunk & unwanted ingredients. Give your hair the care it needs with this nourishing flaxseed gel you can make right at home. You can also use this flaxseed gel as a hair mask or face mask as the nourishing properties also hydrate and soothe your skin while also helping to fade acne scars and hyperpigmentation.
